SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT

If your ED has a psychological cause, such as stress, anxiety or depression, counselling can be an effective treatment.

Most of the time you will only notice this issue when your wife/partner starts complaining. So, for the treatment, we also encourage people to come in as a couple. Couples’ psychosexual counselling, or one-on-one sessions with the doctor will benefit many without the need of medications. Sometimes even just talking over the issues with a trained professional can help treat the problem.

It can be a while before any effects from counselling are seen, so it is often combined with prescription medicines such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra which treat ED in the short term.

Viagra is the brand name for the drug sildenafil, Cialis is the brand name for tadalafil and Levitra is the brand name for vardenafil.

These drugs all work in a similar way. They all belong to a class of medications identified as PDE5-i. These medicines are not aphrodisiacs, so you will still need to be sexually stimulated in order to get an erection.

Penile erection is caused by the engorgement of the penis with blood. PDE-5 inhibitors are used as they help to relax the muscles and increase blood flow to the body. Ultimately, more prolonged the engorgement of the penis. How long the effect of each drug lasts is one of the key differences between them.

How long does the drug last for?

  1. Viagra is a drug that people use only when they need it. A person takes the drug 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual activity, and the effects typically last for 3-5 hours.
  2. Levitra may start working faster than Viagra, but it lasts for about the same amount of time. Levitra does have fewer common side effects than Viagra, and it isn’t associated with a rash or muscle aches.
  3. The effect of a similar dose of Cialis may last up to 36 hours. For this reason, people looking for a long-lasting drug may choose Cialis. Cialis is also approved to treat enlarged prostate. The fact that it comes in a low-dose (2.5 mg) version also means that Cialis can be taken every day. A daily dose will ensure that the drug’s always in your system.

In all three medications though, you may take them with or without meals. General consideration should be given to this in terms of how you react to certain meals. If taken on an empty stomach, all three of these medications will be absorbed quicker into the bloodstream and thus will take effect sooner. With this though, you can also get all the adverse effects of the drugs as stated below. Of the 3 medicines, the absorption of Viagra is slowed down the most if taken with food especially an oily meal.

Consuming alcohol is also something that should be considered on an individual basis. There are people who perform better with alcohol intake whereas there are people who cannot perform at all following alcohol consumption. In any case, these medications will only work to enhance an existing trait. For instance, if you can perform well, it will enhance this. If you previously have already had issues, it will be made more apparent.

SIDE EFFECTS OF EACH MEDICATION

Viagra

The side effects include but not limited to:

  • headaches
  • stomach pain
  • facial flushing
  • congestion
  • nausea or diarrhoea
  • colour blindness
  • blurred vision
  • Blue vision

Cialis

The side effects include but not limited to:

  • headaches
  • facial flushing
  • low blood pressure
  • congestion
  • dizziness
  • chest pain

Levitra

The side effects of Levitra include but not limited to:

  • headache
  • congestion
  • facial flushing
  • indigestion
  • upset stomach
  • dizziness
  • back pain

As you can see, most of the side effects are quite similar. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol while on any PDE5 inhibitor should be avoided as alcohol can reduce the chance of getting an erection. You also shouldn’t combine different ED drugs. Be sure to mention all other health conditions you have. This is to ensure we can give you the proper medications that may not interfere with your current health conditions.

In some cases, using these medications may mean you need to completely avoid PDE5 inhibitors. In other cases, adjusting your dosage of the medication can reduce the possibility of drug interactions while using PDE5 inhibitors.

Which is for me?

It is known that Cialis is the only drug of the four that has approval for use by people with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate. Anyone with both ED and BPH should consider Cialis as their treatment option. It is also known that Cialis helps to improve urine flow.

A person can take Cialis every day to keep the body ready for sexual stimulation at any time. This allows for some sexual freedom that may be missing with the other options. Here at DTAP @ KL, we would consider prescribing daily Cialis in combination with Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) for better and longer results for patients with ED.

Viagra or Levitra may be better for people who do not engage regularly in sexual activity and would rather take one pill each time they plan on having sex.

Personal reasons may also guide a choice. Each body reacts to medications differently. Side effects vary between people, and the potential side effects may help an individual to decide which drug suits them best. For instance, if one drug causes nausea, they might consider another drug. *Do note that Viagra, Levitra or Cialis, will not cure ED, but they may provide relief from its symptoms.

If you are looking for a more permanent treatment, ESWT may be an option for you. There are many side effects and interactions to consider, but, with the right choice and correct use, studies show that these drugs can help a person to overcome ED and engage in sexual activity.

It is worth remembering that none of these drugs will provide sexual stimulation. The person will need stimulation in order to have an erection. So, don’t worry! You won’t be walking around with a hard-on all the time (although some may wish for it).

The only way to know which drug is best for you may be through trial and error. People should work directly with a doctor to track side effects and decide which drug is their best treatment option. It is important to understand these differences in order to make the best choice about which to choose.
